The process of wearing Dashain Tika and Jamra continues even today on Ekadashi. The process of tika and jamra as offerings to Navadurga continues on the day of Kojagrata Purnima until all sacrifices are completed.
Nepali people celebrate Badadashain festival grandly for 15 days from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Ashwin Shukla Poornima.
On the day of Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, the day of Vijayadashami begins with the Vedic rituals of Dashain in the house or in the worship room with the abhishek of the glass set up and the application of Tika and Jamra after the immersion of the goddess in the morning.
Those who receive blessings from close family members and respected people on Dashami day by tika Jamra, but are unable to reach distant relatives, apply tika till Kojagrat Purnima.
Vedmani Bhattarai, a member of the Nepal Panchang Adjudicatory Development Committee, says that while it is customary for some people to do tika only on the day of Vijaya Dashami, some people also do it until Kojagrat Purnima, saying that it should not be taken otherwise.
He said, “The tradition of Nepali society has its own uniqueness and characteristics.” Each place has its own traditions. In eastern and central Nepal, it is customary to apply the vaccine until the full moon day. In many places of western Nepal, it has become a custom to take tika only one day after the immersion of Durga. There was no question of taking the customs that were carried out according to their own environment otherwise.’
Similarly, today Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi is being celebrated as Papankusha Ekadashi. It is a religious belief that fasting on today’s Ekadashi will curb the sins committed in the past knowingly or unknowingly.
