How to Reach Rara Lake from Kathmandu

Now, you can go to Rara by both air and land. If you go by land, you stop at Sallaghari near the lake. If you go by air, you can reach Rara Lake after walking for about two hours from Talcha Airport in Mugu. Rara can also be reached using public transport. Until a few years ago, it took 10 days to walk from Surkhet to reach Rara. However, that is no longer the case. Now, you do not have to walk for 10 days to reach Rara. To go by public transport, a daily Karnali Yatayat bus from Kathmandu goes to Jumla.

From Kathmandu, you can reach the Jumla district headquarters, Khalanga, by bus in about 30 to 32 hours. From Jumla district headquarters, local buses do not leave for Rara. Those who go by car should reserve a small vehicle. However, buses are available from Khalanga to Mugu district headquarters, Gamgadi, via the Sinja Valley. From Gamgadi, you can reach Rara in four to five hours by walking.

There are two airports to reach Rara by air. Flights are available from Rajha Airport in Nepalgunj, Banke, and from Surkhet to Talcha in Mugu. After landing at Talcha Airport, Rara can be reached in a few hours on foot. However, if you travel by air from Kathmandu, you can reach Rara and come to Kathmandu in two days. Take a morning flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, you can go back to Talcha Airport.

From Talcha, Rara can be reached in two hours. Even if you cover the entire Rara Lake in one go and stay in Rara for one night, you can easily reach Kathmandu by air the next day. The air route has made Rara close. However, the air route is not suitable for seeing the picturesque hills of Kalikot, Dailekh, Jumla Mugu, and Patan.

The easiest way for pedestrians to reach Rara Lake is to reach Jumla Sudarmukam. However, without reaching the Jumla headquarters, you can also go through the Sinja Valley from Nagma. Danfelek can be reached in about an hour’s walk from the Jumla district headquarters.

The beauty of Rara Lake cannot be explained by one season. This lake is covered with snow during the winter, while from the end of Jestha to the first week of Shrawan, Rara Lake is covered with flowers.

Rara Lake, located in Mugu district, a major choice for domestic tourists, is located at an altitude of 2,990 meters above sea level. Declared a Ramsar site in 2008, this lake is spread over an area of ​​10.8 km. The average length of the lake is 5 km, its width is 3 km, and its depth is 167 meters.

Rara National Park is home to 51 species of mammals and 272 species of birds. The lake is home to a fish species called ‘snow tout’, which is found nowhere else in the world. Although Rara Lake is suitable for visiting throughout the year, people go to see Rara covered in snow and Rara covered in flowers.

Murma Top, located at an altitude of about 4,000 meters above sea level, is the best place to see the full shape of Rara Lake. From this place, when the weather is clear, you can see 6 districts of the central and far-western regions. It takes 5 hours to walk along the entire shore of Rara Lake.

Since Rara Lake is located within the Rara National Park, vehicles are prohibited from entering Rara. You have to stop your vehicles at Mili Chaur and walk towards Rara Lake. However, there are arrangements for horses for those who cannot walk.
